The beaches of Marina di Ragusa
The beach at Marina di Ragusa is an expanse of golden sand, perfect for sandcastles! The water is shallow for several metres out making it safe to paddle in, and the beach runs from the harbour all the way along until it meets the main square. The promenade runs alongside the entire distance. Just a short walk from the main piazza, and with a promenade full of wonderful ice cream parlours, beach shops and restaurants, whole days can easily be spent relaxing on the sand, with a good book and the sound of the waves.
Close to the marina the water is calm and quiet, with cool breezes increasing as you move eastwards; breezes which you will be grateful for during the summer months! There are beach clubs dotted along the stretch, with "La Ola" nearer the Marina, "Margarita" close to the Piazza Malta and "Baia" further along the east coast, towards the end of Lungomare Andrea Doria. Further still to east (a car ride away, or a longer walk if you're feeling energetic) is the River Irminio, a beautiful nature reserve with almost deserted beaches and a host of flora and fauna. The western side of the harbour is even more off the beaten track, which means that even in the busiest summer months it is possible to claim a patch to sunbathe in. This is also the perfect area for picnic lunches on the rocks, which dip gently into the sea. If the weather is nice (which it almost always is) a dip in the crystal clear sea shouldn't be missed!
